Chocolate Hearts Cake

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I used that as the perfect excuse to devote time and energy to a beautiful chocolate cake … however that was not without its challenges.*

I knew I wanted to make something special for Valentine’s Day. It’s always been one of my favorite holidays. It gets a lot of flack, but Valentine’s Day is more for just the lovers! It’s for friends and family too, and it’s for celebrating all of the important people you love in your life.

This cake took me about four days to make, but not because it’s overly complicated. The actual cake and frosting were pretty easy to make! It took so long because I devoted a lot of time  to the decorations and frosting. It also took a long time because I decided to only buy two tips for my piping bags even though I needed to use each tip with each color frosting. So I ended up washing those tips over six times while decorating!

The cake itself is a chocolate cake and I got the recipe from chelsweets. I added three tablespoons of espresso to it. The espresso enhances the chocolate flavor. By adding three tablespoons, I ensured there would also be a hint of espresso flavor to the cake. If you just wanted the espresso to develop a deeper chocolate flavor, you should only add 1-2.

*Overall, this cake went smoothly. It went slightly awry when I filled it. I really wanted to do a chocolate ganache ring in the middle with strawberry preserves and homemade whipped cream. The trouble is I forgot to level my cake which angled the strawberries so they slid off the cake. This ended with me having to combine the three fillings in an attempt to save my cake from becoming soaked and soggy. It all tasted really good, but didn’t look super pretty on the inside.

For the buttercream, I got the recipe off of sallysbakingaddiction.com (but I had to add a good amount of salt as it was very sweet) and colored it with gel food dyes that I got at Jo-Anne Fabrics. The sprinkles are from Neon Yolk.

I hope you all have a lovely Valentine’s Day! I’ll be uploading videos of my piping to Instagram (@cookingwithgill), so make sure to keep a look out for those!

Xoxo,

Gill
